Phil finished this little narrow path in one day to begin his stone path project. This path veers off the site of the future main path to reach the deck. Day Two of path building...the main path begins. Day 3 of stonework...the main path continues! It's also much easier to see the layout of the garden now. All of the dirt areas will be added to the garden. We will certainly be busy planting in 2013! This area of stonework below is defining where the garden area will cut in to the path. I will be looking for a large leaf yellow hosta to accentuate this spot. I think the yellow hosta will visually pull you along the path and right up to the yellow door. :) Phil is working on the steps leading up to Two Holt from the parking area. Phil decided he liked the paths better with charcoal gray mortar instead of gravel between the stones so he went back and started adding mortar to the paths. If you know Phil, you know that he rarely completely finishes a project so I'm not sure when the paths will be completed!

A whole week at Two Holt in October! Can life get any better? So...how did we spend our week? The chairs we bought for our deck table finally arrived at the store and we took those up to complete the outdoor eating area. We took up a couple of favorite watering cans to add to the deck decor and decided to use a bench left behind by the previous owner outside under the hanging window art. I think we'll paint the bench a bright blue to add a punch of color to the deck. We took an old baker's rack we had in Alabama up to Two Holt to use on the deck. You can see we've started adding some pieces to display on it. It will look so good next summer with potted plants and smaller knick-knacks sitting on it. Did you notice the rain boot at the bottom of the baker's rack? We bought that at my favorite little shop in Highlands. It's metal with a hard plastic liner inside and I can't wait to fill it with flowers next summer! Did I mention that the deck didn't pass the final inspection? We have a year to complete the required changes...add hurricane clips, joist hangers, gutters (which I really didn't want!), and a smaller hand rail at the stairs. So here's Phil adding the hurricane clips... I took one last look from our deck...how I love to see my neighbors walk by. We met another neighbor, Mark. He owns the house across the road that sits on Mirror Lake. Mark is so generous! He told us to cut down any trees or remove any limbs on his property to improve our view of Mirror Lake. We plan to do just that before next summer. None of the trees in the picture below will be cut...this is the view looking up the road. Phil and I enjoyed watching this beautiful swan on Mirror Lake. He swam right up to us and followed us as we walked around the lake. Dry Falls had been closed for a few months while work was done on the parking area, access to the falls, and observation platforms. This is Dry Falls... Visitors to Dry Falls can walk behind the waterfall and look down the Cullasaja River. Phil took a picture of me taking a picture from behind the waterfall! Our brother, Larry, took a picture of Phil and me at Dry Falls. After we left Dry Falls, we took a drive down towards Horse Cove to visit the giant poplar tree. This is the second largest poplar tree in the United States. It's 400 years old with a girth of more than 25 feet. Phil will return to Two Holt in a couple of weeks to close the little cottage for the winter. I know I will spend many days dreaming of our return!
