I took a couple of days off from school to join Phil at Two Holt. We had a few errands to do in Franklin, North Carolina on Friday as we prepare to begin construction on our addition. We went by our lawyer's office to combine our 2 1/2 lots into one large lot which gives us the footprint needed for this sizable addition and new driveway with turnaround areas. Not only does this give us the needed footprint, but now we front on Hickory Hill Road and Wyanoak Road. We will always have complete privacy behind Two Holt. Next we made our way to the Macon County Building Inspection office to file for a building permit. The guy we needed to see was out of the office for a couple of hours so we drove down the street to an old favorite restaurant--The Sunset Restaurant. Phil's mom and dad loved to go here for pie so we had a piece of their homemade coconut custard pie and talked about old times. We headed back up the mountain to Highlands. The road from Franklin to Highlands is known as The Gorge Road...it is one of my favorite drives with steep mountain sides you could almost touch out of the window and the deep gorge on the other side of the road. All along the way, the Cullasaja River winds its way down the mountain, tumbling over rocks, filling small tranquil pools, and always steadily flowing down this gorgeous mountain. Beautiful, BUT unfortunately Phil was driving which means he passed every single pull-over where I could take pictures! The Gorge Road...this is a straight drop down on the other side of this guard rail. Phil tells about the time his grandmother saw the gorge for the first time in the back seat of his parents' car. She fell to the floor board, covered her head, and begged to be taken back to Alabama. It surely looked like the end of the earth to her! After driving back up to Two Holt, we settled in to watch our Auburn Tigers' opening football game. While we watched, we baked an apple pie with fresh locally grown apples. Both the apple pie and our Auburn Tigers were winners which made for a delightful night! We took an afternoon walk and then drove into town to eat at a another favorite of ours, The Pizza Place. We did a little people watching on Main Street and admired the gorgeous flower boxes at Old Edwards Inn. Monday morning we met with a prospective contractor for our new addition, Michael Jennings. We have three contractors from which to choose and we like each one of them. This is going to be a tough call! After Michael left, Phil and I decided to load up debris from the recent tree cutting to haul to the landfill. We filled the truck up... On the way back to Two Holt we stopped at a pull-over to admire another view of these mountains we love. Tomorrow I leave Phil at Two Holt and return to Alabama. Phil will lock down a few dates with the grading contractor, asphalt company, concrete company, and waterproofing company. In October we will take our first HUGE step in the building process by taking up our old driveway, putting in our new driveway and digging out our basement garage which will be the foundation for our addition. We're so very excited!

Phil and I took a walk through the once beautiful garden at our Alabama home and remembered a pair of these neglected gliders. Phil agreed to take on the time consuming task of bringing these back to life so that we could use the comfortable gliders at Two Holt. Phil cleaned each glider down to its bare wood... ...three paint coats later and we have gorgeous cornflower blue gliders! We're adding a stone grotto in the hillside behind Two Holt and a pair of these lovelies will be the perfect touch. I think we'll go searching for more neglected treasures waiting for us!
