The great solar eclipse of 2017! Where were you? We were right here at home in Highlands, standing on our upper balcony in the path of 100% totality! Thousands of visitors poured into Highlands so we decided to eclipse in place. This picture was taken at 11:00. See the beautiful sunshine pouring over us? Total eclipse was expected at 2:35. And we were so excited! We even wore our eclipse t-shirts. At noon, we were a little concerned as clouds rolled in. Would the whole event be blocked by cloud cover? At 1:00 the clouds were looking more threatening. At 2:00 we were losing hope as the clouds seemed to settle in. At 2:30 we were still covered in clouds but I decided to sit on the upper deck and experience totality through the clouds. Look how fast day turned to night at 2:36! You'll hear a few people cheer as darkness overtakes us and the nighttime creatures start singing. And then the most beautiful thing happened. The clouds parted and there it was... a TOTAL eclipse! Beautiful! And we did get to see it! Afterwards Phil and I hurried down to get ready for neighborhood guests we had invited for a cookout. We enjoyed good food and even better company as we talked about our amazing day! And then we gathered around the 'photo booth' where we grabbed a few props and struck a pose for pictures to remember the day! Have I mentioned how much I love our Mirror Lake community in Highlands? Well, I do!

Ahhh! August in the garden. In my Alabama garden most of my plants would be frying in the heat and humidity, but here in our little Highlands rainforest, blooms continue to delight the eye. Just look at the beautiful blue of these Endless Summer hydrangeas. These Ruby Spice Summersweet blooms are just now joining the garden show. i wish you could smell the delightful scent of these David garden phlox. The coneflower blooms continue to delight. I hope these drop a few seeds for additional plants next year. Our New Dawn Climbing Rose was added this year. We've had a few blooms but expect lots more future roses from this prolific bloomer. What's the old adage for perennials? "First year it sleeps. Second year it creeps. Third year it leaps." Shhh! She's sleeping! These are the last of the daylily and stargazer lily blooms blooming the first week in August. Now as I publish this post the daylilies and stargazers blooms are gone until next year. These hydrangeas were here when we bought Two Holt. And though it doesn't bloom, I have to show you a picture of our beautiful Japanese Hakone Grass. I love it! So will there be any more garden sights to thrill us this year? Oh, yes! The toad lily blooms and the strawberry vanilla hydrangea blooms are coming. The munchkin oak leaf hydrangea leaves will give us a fall show. Our fothergilla shrubs will be turning bright orange. There's still plenty to see before the garden goes to sleep for the winter. Don't you just love a garden?
