Here are a few potting shed bench images I've collected from the Internet for inspiration. This one uses wrought iron fence sections as an accent. I love wrought iron!
The recent drought years and the deep south heat have curbed our gardening fever at home in Alabama. But the North Carolina mountain weather has helped us rediscover our love of gardening. There's not a spot suitable for a potting shed at Two Holt and watershed restrictions make us think before using our precious available covered square footage allotment. There is a little spot on the back side of Two Holt where I plan to put a potting bench. Ignore the ugliness of the area right now--it still needs painting--but I promise you that it will be a sweet little spot when the potting bench is finished! Here it is right now... We saved the old kitchen sink after it was replaced and I plan on incorporating it into the potting bench design. I want plenty of countertop space, shelving, and organizing space. I also think I'll cut a hole from the countertop and have a bin beneath the hole so I can just swipe away the dirt after working. Hmmm...maybe I'll keep the cut out circle and mount a knob on top so I can plug the hole when I don't need it. So many possibilities! Here are a few potting shed bench images I've collected from the Internet for inspiration. This one uses wrought iron fence sections as an accent. I love wrought iron! And another one using iron detail... Or how about this one made from an old door... Or maybe I can use one of the old cottage windows in the design like the one below... This one uses an old pot... I love skirts like in the picture below. I know I can't use fabric in the unprotected spot where I'm planning to put the bench, but could I maybe use a shower curtain to achieve the look? The one below uses old shutters and a little wicker... And I must, absolutely MUST, have a hanging sign! Send me any more ideas you have! I'll be planning my new bench all through the fall and winter!

The last two weeks have been the most emotionally draining I have had in a long time. Two Holt is already proving to be a place of rest and renewal for me. I drove up to Two Holt to meet Phil a couple of nights ago. Phil had left the lights on for me...what a welcoming sight! Phil hung the window from the deck beam and the chandelier from the deck ceiling. When the morning light shines behind the window art, it glows like a stained glass window. We also hung our new window box. I can't wait until next spring when the white bacopa, purple fanflower, red geraniums, gray dusty miller, and yellow wave petunias all tumble over each other in this little box! Notice the "E.O.Elder" sign in the picture? It originally hung at Toe Holt just a few doors up the road from Two Holt. (E.O. Elder was Phil's father.) The current owner of the old family place, our niece, gave Phil the sign. The weather wasn't the best for painting so Phil decided to do a little stone work. We have plans for a main path up to Two Holt and two paths that spur off the main path--one to the deck and one that goes around the back of the cottage. Here's Phil's little path to the deck. The stone is called "Apple Orchard." The colors are so beautiful. We bought it from a little place in Cashiers, North Carolina. Let me take you inside Two Holt to show you how the kitchen/living room project turned out. If you remember, we wanted to take out the wall between the kitchen and living room. Here's the before picture... We decided to replace the hot water heater with a tankless water heater. We built a bump-out addition to house the water heater system, the washer/dryer, and still had room for cleaning supplies and tools. Here's a picture inside the bump-out... When we eliminated everything from the wall, out came the wall, and viola...here's our new open concept kitchen. New gas cooktop and electric oven in a new island...new granite countertops and new sink on the other side! You can see we still have trim work to do in this area--around windows and doors. We still need to put up beadboard walls. And we still need to sand and refinish the floors. Always a project or two waiting to be done! I'm already planning yet another project for next spring--a new potting bench area! I'll tell you all about it in my next post! :)
