Two Holt's starting to feel the love! It seems she's standing a bit taller these days. The screened porch is coming next! Keep watching!

AFTER the guest book was already published under "Thistle Dew", a nephew quite innocently renamed our little cottage. He refers to it as "Two Holt" and the name is absolutely perfect!
Phil helped his dad build a little place in Highlands almost 50 years ago. As one of his brothers was helping build the place, he said about the steep landscape, "It's hard to get a good toe holt up here." The cabin was named Toe Holt and was enjoyed by Phil's mom, dad, brothers and their families for many years. Phil and I even honeymooned at Toe Holt. The brothers sold Toe Holt to a niece a few years back. Phil and I decided we wanted another place in that same little community as Toe Holt. The cottage we just bought is only five or so doors down from Toe Holt. In fact, Phil's mom and the last owner of our place often visited each other and took long walks together when in Highlands. So when our nephew referred to our place as Two Holt, we knew he had tagged our little place with a name that explains it all...it pulls in our connection to Highlands and to the Mirror Lake community. So when you visit and go to sign the guest book, just smile and cross out "Thistle Dew" and write Two Holt instead. Now you know why! Remember our closing on Thursday, May 3rd? Well, we found out the owners didn't sign the papers. "Oh, the papers will be here tomorrow probably." So Monday, May 7th comes and no papers. It seems the owner had been hospitalized. No problem...take the papers to her and allow her to sign it there, right? No....she's in a hospital on a Hawaiian island...a different Hawaiian island than the one she lives on. So today we find out that she will be released NEXT week, return to her home island, sign and return the papers. The present expectation is that the papers will be here by the end of next week.
We have a contractor waiting to start on our front screened porch and IF we get the papers before HE gets another job all is okay. BUT, if he gets another job, we are left to find another contractor or wait for him to finish the job. Patience. I need patience and I need it NOW! Phil and I had the final closing on Two Holt on May 3rd. We spent the rest of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday going through the previous owner's things and deciding what to keep and what to donate to the local non-profit organization, Mountain Findings. What a job!
I met the next-door neighbor and toured her home, "Hi Rest". She has been steadily working on her house since she purchased it 10 or so years ago. She lives in Atlanta and comes to Highlands about twice a month. Each evening we took a walk through the Mirror Lake community. There are several different walking routes we can take from our little place and I know the ritual of a daily walk will be a favorite time for us. On Sunday morning we visited First Baptist Church in Highlands as we begin searching for a church family in the Highlands community. It will be hard to visit anywhere else! The small congregation were the friendliest I have ever met. We had a quick lunch and I headed back to Phenix City, leaving Phil behind to continue working on Two Holt. He plans to clean up under the house and around the house, prepare it for painting and then paint it. He will also meet with the contractor to decide which projects he will tackle. It will be three long weeks before I return to Highlands. I'm already homesick! |
