"Cares melt when I kneel in my garden." What better way to pass the dreary winter days than to plan our 2013 garden projects for Two Holt? If you look closely you will see one of two boxwoods planted on either side of the side stoop. We plan to plant two more boxwoods, flanking the steps to the screened porch. Between the two porch areas, we will be adding hydrangeas, but we still have to decide between a white blooming or blue blooming variety. Maybe we will edge the foundation beds with silver dragon lilyturf. It's recommended zones are 6 - 11 so we're in its furthermost winter-hardy zone. And I have my heart set on a beautiful clematis growing up that corner post on the front of the screened porch! We have more plans for the side area below. I'm already thinking of how to plant the window box we added. I like the fullness of the window box plantings in the photographs below. I think the fireplace chase needs something on it. I have thought about adding a large wreath or maybe some other type wall art. The metal "Birds in the fountain" artwork featured below is nice. I am also thinking of adding gable trim at the porch gable and the roof gable above it. And I want to replace the current overhead light on the side stoop--it's just a yellow bulb currently. I like the light fixture pictured below. The birdbath garden will be a priority this year. Would it be too much to have a slightly smaller version of the urn on its side beside our little birdbath? Or I could move away from the pottery look and add a wooden whisky barrel to get the same effect. Maybe the birdbath garden will be planted all in hosta or a mixture of hosta and a few companion plants. This year we'll add an arbor at the garden's entrance. There is a metal arbor we've got our eye on at a little garden center down the mountain. I think the thinner lines of a wrought iron arbor will fit better in our small garden rather than a heavier looking wood arbor. I also like how the potential fireplace chase iron wall art pictured again below could tie in with the metal arbor placed away from the house (near where the photographer was standing to take the photo of Two Holt below). Phil is itching to get started on a little flower garden by the road. Just like the rest of the property, it has been neglected for decades. Phil plans to relocate our garden bell from our home in Alabama to Two Holt and build a garden around it. I think he has a great idea! Pictured below are a few plants I want to add to our little sitting garden below. Some will be perennials added to the garden floor and some will be containers like the cute container on the back of the adirondack chair. We will be planting a few plants in front of the cottage (road side), too. I'm thinking a broad sweep of a carefully selected shrub will look best. We're currently thinking a large grouping of oakleaf hydrangeas would like nice. The photographs below show it in bloom and its fall color. The only problem is that it does lose all leaves in the winter and it looks so bare! Behind the oakleaf hydrangeas and growing on the lattice beneath the deck I can envision beautiful clematis like the ones pictured below.
