I encourage you to check out this program in your own home town and think about volunteering. We love it!
As renovations at Two Holt wind down, Phil and I are freeing up time to volunteer in our new community. We called around in search of a local Meals On Wheels program. Phil had volunteered for this program in Alabama and enjoyed it. Meals On Wheels delivers a hot lunch to senior citizens who need a little help. After filling out paperwork and having a background check completed, we were given a route to run every Friday. Our first stop is the hospital in Highlands where we pick up the meals which have been packed to stay hot and cold items have been packed in a cooler. Recipients are given a hot entree and two side dishes, bread, dessert, and milk or bottled water. After packing our truck we're off to the five houses scattered around Highlands to deliver the meals. We realize that sometimes we're the only person the recipient will see that day so we check to see what we can do to help or we take time to talk a bit. One recipient needs her garbage taken to a dumpster. One lady has us bring in her empty bird feeder and replace it with one she has filled for the birds. Some just love to visit a bit. When all the meals are delivered, we take completed paperwork to the Highlands Recreation Center where our local Meals On Wheels program is coordinated. We receive paper work for the next day's volunteer and take it back to the hospital along with the food carriers.
I encourage you to check out this program in your own home town and think about volunteering. We love it!
