I think we've decided on an exterior paint plan...almost. I'm currently loving gray walls, white trim, and a yellow door. But there are so many shades of gray and yellow and white. After looking at countless photos, I like a richer, warmer gray--not too light, not too dark. I don't like a lemon yellow--it's too "in your face" for me. Here's two photos of houses I DO like in this color scheme...hmmm...is that first gray deep enough? Is that second gray too dark? And we're close to picking out a roof. We've decided we don't want a metal roof. We really like the architectural shingles. Below are two nice choices of color. I love the two doors below. The first door is a beautiful color. I love the actual doors in the second photo. We had decided on french doors, but I'm wondering if I can find doors like the ones in the second picture.

I like the first gray. You can find doors like you want. Just keep looking. It will be beautiful. I hope I sign your visitors' book one day.

I like the first gray, too. The other gray does make the yellow door "pop", but I'm afraid it might be too dark in the woodland setting of this little cottage. Thanks for the encouragement. I know you've taken on a MUCH larger job than this with the building of your dream home. As soon as Thistle Dew is suitable enough for guests, I will let you know. I want my family and friends to enjoy Highlands as much as we do. It's a beautiful little town and has taken great precautions to preserve the natural beauty without becoming a commercial tourist hotspot. You and Jay will love it. I promise!

I'm so excited for you and Phil as I remember this quaint little cabin up the road from Toe Holt. There will always be a special love for Highlands as our children have many chilhood memories. I will always remember Cbell and Neal leaving me behind as they came by our house on their way to Toe Holt for the summer. I'd look at the car loaded down almost touching the ground. I would look weepy eyed as I saw them drive away as I knew it would be 3 l-o-n-g months before I would see them again. But oh how she loved her Toe Holt and all her walking buddies that lived close by. A very close friend (Ms. Shaddock) from this cute little cabin now named "Thistle Dew" was one she'd pick up as she began her daily walk. She'd pick her up on her afternoon or morning stroll. As I look at "Thistle Dew" again it floods me with wonderful memories of my past "just up the road". Now I look at it as a beautiful new beginning. I look forward to following the blog and one day Donny and I going up to "help". Now my opinion on the gray is the first one too. Love the yellow french doors. Remember when we built our potting shed? We found those old green colums at the flea market. Lots of neat places to go and find special "oldies". Love the idea of knocking out a wall. (you know Donny and I specialize in that area too) lol Anyway, what an exciting project for you and Phil. It will bring many days of laughter and happy walls saying, "it feels good to have someone living here and making me new memories." I happily look forward to watching this blossom into a masterpiece!!! One simple question, we have begun working on our potting shed, we want it to have a little pick me up. What color should I paint the white door? Red to stand out or green to match the colums? I'll get your input as a sneaky question on your blog for "Thistle Dew".ha ha love you too.

Carolyn, yes, you're remembering the right place! I felt such a connection to that little cottage the moment I walked inside. I have a very talented nephew who said he would help with tile-laying. He makes me laugh with his own name for the place--Two Holt. Got to love Carl's sense of humor and good heart. I look forward to you and Donny spending time with us up there soon. :)
