Two years ago we had our driveway re-done and a large stone retaining wall built beside it. There are small pockets of soil throughout this wall. Today I decided to take our stone wall to the next level. Over the next few months I'll create a living stone wall by adding plants to many of those wall pockets. The first plants to go in are five Drummond's Pink Creeping Phlox. These perennials bloom about this time each year here in Highlands. I've been drooling over the more mature plants planted along many of the rock walls around town. Solid blankets of pink blooms cascade over the large stones making a big enough impact to entice any driver to stop and admire the beauty. I'll be adding lavender creeping phlox in the next few days along with a favorite of mine, Creeping Jenny. I'm already making a list and checking it twice to plant other wall pockets. The lists below will guide me as my wall has sunny spots and shadier spots, but I also need to consider bloom times to encourage season long blooming. So what do you think about a living stone wall? I'll keep you updated of my progress and hopefully, this time next year, we'll have a gorgeous garden IN the wall!

Phlox is one of my very favorites. As you described so well, its cascading color is a real treat this time of year. Best wishes on your project, it's going to be beautiful.

I returned and bought several pots of a lavender creeping phlox to add, too. I hope it does well for me.
